What is Hindfoot Arthrodesis?

Hindfoot arthrodesis is a surgical procedure that involves fusing one or more of the joints in the hindfoot, which includes the subtalar, talonavicular, and calcaneocuboid joints. This procedure eliminates motion in painful or damaged joints to relieve pain, correct deformity, and improve stability in the foot and ankle.

When is Hindfoot Arthrodesis Recommended?

Hindfoot arthrodesis is typically considered when conservative treatments such as bracing, medications, or physical therapy have failed. It may be recommended for:

  • Severe arthritis in the hindfoot joints
  • Post-traumatic arthritis or deformity
  • Progressive flatfoot deformity
  • Charcot foot
  • Neuromuscular disorders affecting foot stability
  • Failed previous foot surgery
  • Severe foot instability or deformity due to injury or disease

How is Hindfoot Arthrodesis Performed?

The procedure is typically done under general anesthesia. The surgeon makes an incision over the affected joint(s), removes the damaged cartilage, and aligns the bones in the desired position. The bones are then held together with screws, plates, or other fixation devices to allow them to fuse over time. In some cases, a bone graft may be used to enhance healing. The procedure may be done as an outpatient surgery or may require a short hospital stay depending on the complexity.

What to Expect During Recovery After Hindfoot Arthrodesis?

Recovery involves a period of non-weightbearing on the operated foot, usually for 6 to 8 weeks, followed by gradual weightbearing in a walking boot. Physical therapy may be prescribed to restore strength and mobility. Full recovery can take 3 to 6 months, and in some cases, up to a year for complete bone fusion and function restoration.

What are the Risks of Hindfoot Arthrodesis?

As with any surgery, there are potential risks and complications:

  • Infection
  • Nonunion (failure of the bones to fuse)
  • Nerve injury
  • Blood clots
  • Pain from adjacent joints due to increased stress
  • Hardware irritation or failure

What are the Benefits of Hindfoot Arthrodesis?

When successful, hindfoot arthrodesis can offer several important benefits:

  • Significant pain relief
  • Improved foot and ankle alignment
  • Enhanced walking stability
  • Prevention of further deformity
  • Improved ability to wear regular footwear

Hindfoot arthrodesis can be a life-changing procedure for patients struggling with chronic foot pain or instability when conservative measures are no longer effective.
